Woman, her friend held for husband’s murder in Sangam Vihar
Manju and Mechanic Chaman Arrested for Murder of Husband in Sangam Vihar
Bharatmorningnews.com – Police in Delhi have taken into custody a 45-year-old woman alongside her 20-year-old male companion following the death of her spouse at their residence in Sangam Vihar. Authorities revealed that Manju orchestrated the homicide after enduring prolonged physical mistreatment and degradation from her husband.
Details of the Incident
Deputy commissioner of police (south) Anant Mittal identified the deceased as Munna Lal, a builder, who was allegedly slain by his wife Manju, also known as Nazia, and her friend Chaman, who works as a mechanic. The couple shared a 22-year marriage and resided in Sangam Vihar with three offspring—two daughters aged 19 and 21, plus a younger son.
Officers received an emergency call at approximately 5am on Monday reporting an injury sustained during what appeared to be a burglary at a property on Ratiya Marg. Upon arrival, police discovered Lal in critical condition. He was transported to AIIMS Trauma Centre, where medical staff pronounced him dead upon arrival.
Investigation and Evidence
Initially, Manju informed investigators that she and her three children were resting in a separate bedroom while Lal remained in the front room. She stated she awoke to discover the home disordered and her husband wounded.
While police first suspected a robbery, examination of the scene and surveillance recordings prompted further scrutiny. Investigators noted that bloodstains seemed to have been wiped away and household items were moved in ways indicating an effort to disguise the homicide as a break-in.
Video surveillance captured unusual activity involving a woman and another individual near the residence. The footage additionally documented a masked figure entering the premises around 1.45am and departing approximately 3.15am, according to Mittal. This woman was later confirmed to be Manju.
Confession and Motive
During interrogation, Manju reportedly confessed to the conspiracy and acknowledged Chaman's participation.
She said that the motive was linked to domestic disputes, financial difficulties and physical assault and humiliation. She said that the couple had been married for 22 years and he had been beating and abusing her for several years,
an investigator stated.
According to law enforcement, Manju encountered Chaman several months prior at the mechanic workshop where he was employed and developed romantic feelings for him. She allegedly devised the murder plan and promised him ₹5 lakh for assistance in killing Lal.
She said that she first administered sleeping pills. Once he was incapacitated, she, along with Chaman, strangulated him, electrocuted him and assaulted him with a stick,
Mittal explained.
Legal Proceedings
Authorities have not yet determined the exact method used to electrocute the victim. Manju reportedly handed Chaman ₹20,000 during the killing. Additionally, police detained Chaman's associate Kishan, 28, from Sangam Vihar, for allegedly providing shelter to him.
Kishan dropped Chaman to another neighbourhood despite blood on his shirt. He has been bound down but not arrested in the case,
the officer noted.
A case has been filed at Sangam Vihar police station under sections 103(1) for murder, 238(a) for destruction of evidence, and 3(5) for common intention under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. Investigators recovered ₹15,000 in cash during their inquiry. Both arrested individuals have no prior criminal records, according to police statements.
