Statewide Operation Targets Unlawful Passenger Transport Near ST Hubs
Statewide drive targets illegal pax transport - As part of a broader initiative to combat unauthorized transportation, Maharashtra has launched a province-wide operation focusing on key state transport (ST) locations in Pune. Monitoring units have been stationed at major ST stops like Swargate, Wakdewadi, and Pune railway station to prevent private vehicles from picking up or dropping off passengers within a 200-meter radius of Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) bus terminals.
Collaborative Efforts to Enforce Regulations
The campaign, initiated on June 6 after directives from the Bombay High Court’s Aurangabad bench, will continue through June 15. It involves coordinated inspections by teams composed of transport officers, depot supervisors, traffic enforcers, and vigilance staff, aiming to curb illegal transport activities across the state. Officials emphasized that these checks are designed to reduce disruptions to ST services and enhance safety for commuters.
“The ST system is crucial for millions of Maharashtrians. Unauthorized transport not only harms the corporation financially but also endangers passenger safety and worsens traffic congestion around bus stations,” said Pratap Sarnaik, State Transport Minister and MSRTC Chairman. He added, “We’ve directed all departments to strictly enforce rules, ensuring no unlicensed vehicles operate within the restricted zone. This effort is about more than compliance—it’s about creating a reliable and orderly public transport network.”
Commuter Support for Enhanced Safety Measures
Authorities have been urged to work in tandem to swiftly address violations. “Passengers should feel confident that ST stops are secure and free from disruptions caused by unlawful transport,” Sarnaik noted.
“At Swargate, private cars often block entrances and aggressively approach passengers. Regular checks will make commuting safer and more efficient,” remarked Jamir Shaikh, a frequent traveler, highlighting the challenges posed by illegal operators. Commuters praised the move, expressing hope that it would restore order and improve their travel experience.
