BJP and SP Set for Unopposed Rajya Sabha Wins in Uttar Pradesh

Bharatmorningnews.com – Uttar Pradesh’s 10 Rajya Sabha seats appear headed for an uncontested outcome after the Bharatiya Janata Party nominated eight candidates and the Samajwadi Party put forward two. With no third SP nominee entering the race before the deadline, the strength of the two blocs in the state assembly is expected to ensure the election of all 10 candidates without polling.

The final day for filing nominations saw the BJP turn the exercise into a visible show of political mobilisation in Lucknow. Chief minister Yogi Adityanath joined deputy chief ministers Keshav Prasad Maurya and Brajesh Pathak, along with state BJP president Pankaj Chaudhary, as the party’s nominees submitted their papers at the Vidhan Bhawan.

Party supporters gathered in large numbers near the BJP’s state headquarters and along Vidhan Sabha Marg. Vehicles, workers, flowers, garlands, slogans and traditional dhol performances created heavy congestion in the area for several hours. The event came as political parties begin positioning themselves for the Uttar Pradesh assembly election scheduled for 2027.

BJP Names Eight Candidates

The BJP nominees are Dharampal Singh, Radhakant Ojha, Prakash Pal, Vidyasagar Sonkar, Gopi Krishna Pandey, Priyanka Singh Rawat, Ram Pratap Singh Chauhan and Shruti Gangwar. The candidates reached the party headquarters before proceeding to file their nomination documents.

After submitting their papers, several candidates thanked the BJP leadership for selecting them and said they would work to strengthen the organisation.

Maurya expressed confidence that every BJP nominee would be elected, irrespective of whether the SP had chosen to contest with an additional candidate. He described the party’s candidate mix as a “Triveni” bringing together forward communities, backward communities and Scheduled Castes.

He also responded to SP president Akhilesh Yadav’s reference to winning all 403 assembly seats in the next election. Maurya noted that Yadav had invoked the same number ahead of the 2022 assembly election, when the SP secured 111 seats.

Pathak presented the nomination developments as an early political signal before the 2027 contest.

The writing on the wall is clear. The SP has conceded defeat for 2027 polls.

SP Steps Back From Third Nominee

The Samajwadi Party had considered fielding a third Rajya Sabha candidate and had made preparations for that possibility. However, it decided on Tuesday morning not to proceed after reviewing the numbers in the assembly and the risks linked to cross-voting.

Akhilesh Yadav made clear that the party’s attention had shifted to the larger electoral challenge ahead.

Now our eyes are not on three but on 403 seats.

The statement referred to the total number of seats in the Uttar Pradesh assembly and underlined the SP’s intention to concentrate on the 2027 state election rather than pursue a difficult contest for a third Upper House berth.

The SP’s decision means it is set to win two seats with the backing available to it and the Congress. A third candidate would have needed support beyond the SP-Congress group, making voting by legislators from other parties a decisive factor.

How the Numbers Shape the Result

Rajya Sabha members from Uttar Pradesh are elected by the state’s MLAs through a single transferable vote system. On the basis of the current effective strength of the assembly, a candidate needs 37 first-preference votes to secure election.

The BJP-led National Democratic Alliance has sufficient numbers to win eight seats, while the SP and Congress together have enough strength for two. This arithmetic leaves no clear path for an additional SP nominee without support from outside its alliance.

Cross-voting was therefore central to the calculations. While legislators from the NDA could theoretically have supported an SP candidate, Rajya Sabha voting uses an open ballot system. Party representatives can see how their legislators vote, making any departure from an official party position highly visible.

With the assembly polls drawing nearer, the SP chose not to enter a contest dependent on uncertain votes. The result is expected to spare both sides a formal election battle for the 10 available seats.

Next Steps in the Election Process

The deadline for filing Rajya Sabha nominations closed at 3 pm on Tuesday. Scrutiny of the submitted papers is scheduled for October 7, and candidates may withdraw their nominations until October 9.

If any contest remains after the withdrawal deadline, voting is slated for October 16. But with eight BJP candidates and two SP candidates in the field, each aligned with the number of seats their respective blocs can support, polling is presently unlikely.

The nominations have nevertheless provided both parties an opportunity to project their political messages. The BJP used the occasion to demonstrate organisational reach and highlight the social composition of its slate. The SP, meanwhile, framed its decision as a strategic choice to direct its energies toward the full 403-seat assembly contest.

For Uttar Pradesh, the likely uncontested Rajya Sabha result reflects the current balance of power in the assembly. It also offers an early indication of how both major parties are shaping their narratives as the state moves toward another high-stakes electoral cycle.
