The policy, detailed in the Annual Work Plan and Budget (AWP&B) for the 2026-27 academic session, aims to standardize evaluations and better prepare students for competitive exams through objective testing formats. This shift is expected to streamline grading processes and provide more accurate feedback to both educators and learners.
The OMR system, widely used in competitive examinations, will now be implemented in government schools to ensure consistency and efficiency in assessments. The state project office for Samagra Shiksha (Secondary) confirmed that the plan was approved on May 14, 2026, and preparations are currently in progress. Officials emphasized that the move is part of a broader effort to modernize the education system and align it with national standards. This initiative is particularly significant for over 5 lakh UP govt students, who will benefit from standardized testing that reduces subjectivity in grading.
Subject-Specific Committees for Effective Implementation
To ensure the smooth rollout of the OMR-based tests, subject-specific expert committees have been formed. These panels are composed of experienced educators from government secondary schools, selected by district authorities to oversee the process. A senior official from the state secondary education department highlighted that teachers with at least five years of experience in creating exam papers and evaluating board exams will be prioritized for committee roles. Additionally, those familiar with digital tools and computer-based systems are being encouraged to participate.
The curriculum for the tests includes core subjects such as Hindi, English, Mathematics, Science, and Social Science for Classes 9 and 10. At the intermediate level (Classes 11 and 12), the subjects expand to cover Physics, Chemistry, Biology, History, Geography, Economics, and Business Studies. This comprehensive approach ensures that students across all levels are assessed on a wide range of topics relevant to their academic progression. "This initiative is a step forward in making our education system more transparent and student-friendly," added Dharmendra Kumar Singh, principal of a Government Inter College in Prayagraj.
The government has allocated specific resources to train teachers and school administrators on the OMR system. Workshops and training sessions are scheduled to ensure that all stakeholders are equipped to handle the new testing methodology.
