High-flying mail: Drones take to the skies to beat mountain terrain

High flying mail - India's postal service has initiated a drone delivery experiment in Mandi, aiming to revolutionize mail transport in the region's rugged terrain. This trial, conducted in partnership with Skye Air, represents a pivotal step in modernizing delivery systems across Himachal Pradesh’s difficult-to-navigate landscapes.

Test Flight Demonstrates Speed and Feasibility

In a recent demonstration, a drone successfully transported mail from Mandi's central post office to the Rehardhar branch located in the Drang assembly constituency. The 12-kilometer road route was completed in just six minutes, highlighting the efficiency of aerial transport over treacherous mountain paths.

"This technology transforms rural logistics, significantly reducing delivery times in remote areas," said Sanjay Kumar, deputy superintendent at the Mandi head post office.

Overcoming Traditional Limitations

Previously, reaching the Rehardhar branch required a full day due to winding roads. The drone's automated round trip now accomplishes the task in under 20 minutes, showcasing its potential to streamline operations in inaccessible regions.

According to Mandi postmaster Neha Sankhyan, Skye Air is currently operating drones across ten sites in the district to ensure seamless service in challenging locations.

Technical Capabilities and Future Plans

Subhash Dubey, a Skye Air representative, explained that the specialized aircraft used for the project has a 10-kg payload capacity and can travel up to 30-50 km. Eight drones are currently managing active routes in Mandi, with plans to scale the network.

The pilot program addresses immediate logistical bottlenecks while aligning with a broader national strategy. Over 150 post offices nationwide have been chosen for the initiative, with aspirations to expand drone connectivity to 110 facilities in Himachal Pradesh by the future.
