Gurugram sets fresh focus on accident-prone stretches and pending road-safety work

Bharatmorningnews.com – Gurugram’s road-safety agencies have been asked to speed up works at identified accident-prone locations, with Additional Deputy Commissioner Sonu Bhatt stressing the need for departments to meet deadlines and work in closer coordination.

The directions were issued on Monday during the monthly meeting of the District Road Safety Committee at the Mini Secretariat. The review covered black spots on National Highways 48 and 248A, pedestrian facilities, school-area safety measures and traffic-enforcement action.

Engineering measures at high-risk locations

Officials were instructed to revisit the locations already identified as dangerous and ensure that improvements follow technical recommendations. The works under review include installation of traffic signs, fresh road markings, reflective studs, improved lighting, crash barriers and pedestrian crossings.

At Sector 31, several measures have already been completed. These include signboards, markings, road studs, lighting arrangements and expansion of jersey barriers. An unauthorised opening opposite Fauji Dhaba has also been shut to reduce unsafe turning movements.

At Panchgaon Chowk, signages, markings and studs have been put in place. Median railing work, however, remains unfinished and is still pending.

The committee’s review highlighted how road safety depends on a combination of visible guidance for drivers, physical protection for pedestrians and timely maintenance. A missing sign, inadequate illumination or an unsafe road opening can create risks even where other improvements have been completed.

Pedestrian projects and crossings

Pedestrian safety was a major part of the discussion. The Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority has floated a tender for upgrading pedestrian crossings at 32 sites across the city. The planned deadline for completing that work is September 30, 2026.

Officials also placed before the ADC a proposal for a four-to-five-foot iron grille along the central median of Gurugram-Sohna Road. The suggested barrier is intended to guide pedestrians towards safer crossing points and discourage hazardous crossing through the middle of the road.

Other locations examined during the meeting included crossings near Manesar bus stand and Bilaspur Chowk. The committee also reviewed street-lighting requirements on Gurugram-Faridabad Road and at Daulatabad flyover, along with road-safety concerns around Chill Point-Damdama Lake Road, Atul Kataria Chowk, 4-7-9 Chowk, Atrium Place and Udyog Vihar.

Proposed foot overbridges were included in the wider discussion. Such facilities can be important at busy corridors, but their usefulness depends on placing them where people can conveniently access them and ensuring surrounding walkways remain usable.

School zones remain under scrutiny

School transport and the safety of children travelling to class were also reviewed under the Safe School Vehicle Policy. By August 31, authorities had inspected 191 school buses in the district and issued 26 challans for violations.

Work is continuing on safer school zones, including road repairs and speed breakers. A proposal for a dedicated safe school zone outside Government Senior Secondary School in Bhondsi has been sent to the National Highways Authority of India headquarters.

Safety improvements near schools are designed to address periods when children, parents, buses and other traffic share limited road space. Clearly marked crossings, controlled vehicle speeds and well-maintained approaches can make these areas easier for drivers and pedestrians to navigate.

Enforcement figures reviewed

The meeting also assessed recent enforcement against overloading and drunk driving. During August, 250 challans for overloading brought in ₹1.47 crore in compounding amounts. Between September 1 and September 25, a further 150 challans generated ₹85.61 lakh.

Action against drunk driving remained substantial. From July 22 to August 30, authorities issued 2,198 challans and recommended suspension of 1,755 driving licences. Of those licence-suspension recommendations, 1,150 were made in August alone.

Bhatt directed agencies to keep the momentum on both engineering corrections and enforcement, rather than treating them as separate efforts. The committee’s emphasis was on completing pending works within the prescribed timeframes while ensuring that departments responsible for roads, highways, traffic management and public infrastructure remain aligned.

For residents, the measures under review span everyday journeys: walking across major roads, travelling through busy junctions, taking children to school and using highway-linked corridors. The effectiveness of the planned work will depend on whether the identified improvements are delivered on schedule and maintained after installation.
