Gurugram Introduces Bike Patrols to Address Highway Lane Violations

Gurugram deploys bike patrols to curb - Gurugram’s traffic department has launched a new initiative to combat lane violations on major highways, with bike patrol officers now patrolling key stretches and using loudspeaker announcements to guide drivers. Officials confirmed the deployment as part of efforts to enhance traffic flow and reduce incidents of improper lane changes.

Expanded Patrol Coverage

Approximately 150 traffic personnel are stationed on the Delhi-Gurugram (NH-48), Dwarka, Delhi-Mumbai, and Kundli Manesar Palwal (KMP) expressways. These officers utilize 60 two-wheelers acquired through a CSR program to monitor high-traffic areas. Each motorcycle is staffed with two individuals to ensure constant vigilance over critical routes.

The strategy is designed to keep heavy vehicles and commercial goods carriers in the leftmost lane, minimizing disruptions. This approach aims to address growing concerns over erratic driving behavior that has led to frequent bottlenecks.

Officials’ Remarks

A senior traffic official noted that area-specific patrols have been established to tackle congestion at vulnerable points, where inconsistent traffic patterns and lack of lane discipline contribute to delays. These teams work alongside virtual surveillance systems to improve road safety and efficiency.

Separately, a study conducted under the district’s "Zero Fatalities" program by the Ministry of Road, Transport and Highways (MoRTH) revealed alarming data. Analysis of violation records from the past three years showed that 32 fatalities occurred at 11 out of 23 high-risk locations due to dangerous overtaking and zig-zag driving.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Prateek Gehlot highlighted the focus on smooth traffic movement. “Zonal officers are tasked with ensuring seamless implementation, avoiding additional congestion. Priority will be given to monitoring densely populated zones, main thoroughfares, and intersections, while maintaining consistent awareness campaigns,” Gehlot stated.

The move follows a notable surge in traffic violations, with challans rising from 30,029 in 2023 to 79,550 in 2025. Notably, dangerous lane swaps increased from 8,601 in the first quarter to 16,175 in the following five weeks, attributed to improved camera surveillance and stricter enforcement measures.
