Dehradun e-way cameras trigger 1,000+ speeding fines in two days
Dehradun Expressway Cameras Generate Over 1,000 Speeding Tickets in 48 Hours
Bharatmorningnews.com – The Delhi Traffic Police has successfully linked automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) cameras positioned along the Delhi-Dehradun Expressway to its electronic challan platform. This technological connection enables authorities to issue digital penalties for drivers exceeding speed restrictions on the highway.
According to two senior traffic officials, the system went live on Monday and generated more than 1,000 speeding citations by Tuesday.
Enhanced Surveillance Capabilities
Special Commissioner of Police (traffic) Manish Agarwal explained the broader objectives of this initiative:
We are also in the process of further strengthening the enforcement mechanism to identify and prosecute vehicles that are restricted from plying on the Delhi-Dehradun Expressway. There are six ANPR cameras installed by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) at two locations on the DDE that fall under our territorial jurisdiction.
Once violations are captured, the camera data flows directly to the Delhi Traffic Police enforcement center, where officials can take appropriate action. Currently, these devices primarily monitor vehicles for speed infractions, enabling technology-based regulation of the expressway.
It's an important step towards strengthening surveillance and enforcement on high-speed road corridors, where adherence to prescribed speed limits and other traffic regulations is essential for preventing road crashes and ensuring the safety of users,
Agarwal added.
Expanding the Network
Additional Commissioner of Police (traffic) Vijayanta Arya Goyal noted that the electronic challan system had previously connected with ANPR cameras on the Delhi portion of the Dwarka Expressway. This earlier integration demonstrates the growing use of technology for managing high-speed routes linked to the capital.
Goyal stated that the department continues working to connect additional ANPR cameras and intelligent traffic management tools across major highways and expressways. These efforts aim to boost monitoring capabilities, enhance rule compliance, and decrease both accidents and deaths on roads.
Technology-driven enforcement will help promote responsible driving, ensure compliance with traffic rules and improve road safety for all road users,
Goyal emphasized.
Department representatives mentioned that the ANPR cameras serve multiple purposes beyond speed monitoring. They assist in identifying stolen automobiles and tracking vehicles connected to traffic accidents or criminal activities.
