BJP to Contest All 117 Seats in Punjab: Shah

BJP to contest all 117 seats - Amit Shah, the Union home minister, emphasized that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will run independently in the 2027 Punjab assembly elections, dismissing the possibility of a pre-poll alliance with another political party. This decision comes as the party gears up for the upcoming contest, aiming to establish a government on its own.

Leadership Meeting in New Delhi

During a nearly three-hour gathering with Punjab BJP leaders at the party’s headquarters in New Delhi on Friday evening, Shah directed the state leadership to prepare for a solo electoral campaign. He urged them to communicate that the BJP is committed to forming its own government in Punjab, stating,

“We can make our own chief minister if we contest alone. Get ready and convey this message to grassroots workers that the BJP will leave no stone unturned to form its own government in Punjab. Let me make it very clear that we will contest the elections to form our own government.”

Historical Context and Shift in Strategy

The BJP’s shift toward independence in Punjab marks a departure from its earlier reliance on coalition partners. For years, the party operated as a junior partner in the state, often dependent on the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) for rural and Sikh voter support. This alliance, which spanned nearly three decades, collapsed in September 2020 when the SAD withdrew over the Centre’s farm laws, later repealed.

The split had significant consequences. In the 2022 Punjab assembly elections, the BJP won only two seats with a 6.6% vote share, while the SAD’s performance plummeted to three seats—its worst result ever. The 2024 Lok Sabha elections saw the BJP secure 19% of the vote in Punjab despite capturing no seats. Since then, the party has focused on expanding its base beyond urban traders, Hindu voters, and Dalit communities, seeking a broader appeal.

Reinforcing the Stand

BJP general secretary Parminder Brar reiterated the party’s stance after the meeting, stating,

“There will be no alliance with any party. The message from the party high command is clear. We will take our vision, agenda, and the development model of BJP-ruled states to the people of Punjab.”

Punjab BJP chief Kewal Singh Dhillon highlighted the party’s emphasis on development and organizational growth, asserting,

“We discussed Punjab politics and development. There is no talk of any alliance.”

Political Roadmap and Ambitions

Former finance minister Manpreet Singh Badal described the meeting as a session to strategize Punjab’s political, economic, and social challenges. He noted the party outlined a plan to revitalize the state’s economy and reclaim its lost stature.

“The goal is to establish a double-engine government in Punjab. If the double-engine model can succeed anywhere, it is Punjab,”

he said.

The meeting underscores the BJP’s push to become a standalone political force in Punjab, signaling a renewed focus on self-reliance after decades of partnership. With preparations intensifying for the 2027 elections, the party aims to solidify its position as a dominant entity in the state’s political landscape.
