BJP office grenade attack: 3 months on, Chandigarh police file chargesheet, name 56 witnesses
BJP Office Grenade Attack: Chargesheet Filed After Three Months, 56 Witnesses Named
BJP office grenade attack - Three months have passed since two unidentified individuals launched a grenade at the Punjab BJP headquarters in Sector 37, Chandigarh. Recently, the police submitted a detailed 1,465-page chargesheet, identifying 56 prosecution witnesses. Among these, two are protected due to security concerns, with their identities kept confidential.
First-Time Use of Gait Analysis
The chargesheet introduces a novel technique—gait analysis—to determine the movements of suspects. This method, which examines walking patterns such as stride and posture, marks a new approach for Chandigarh police in criminal investigations.
Attack Impact and Initial Response
The grenade was thrown at the BJP office on April 1, causing property damage. A scooter was destroyed, nearby car windows shattered, and the boundary wall showed signs of impact. Fortunately, no one was injured in the incident.
Collaborative Investigation
The National Investigation Agency (NIA) joined the inquiry following the attack. Meanwhile, the Babbar Khalsa International (BKI) group claimed responsibility for the assault. An FIR under the Explosives Act and Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act was formally recorded.
Accused and Evidence Gathering
The prosecution has named 11 individuals linked to the attack. Nine have been detained, while Harpreet Singh (also known as Happy Passian) and Surjit Singh (alias Jota), suspected foreign conspirators, remain at large. Investigators arrested Gurtej Singh and Amanpreet Singh from Rewari, asking them to simulate the attack by throwing the grenade, fleeing, and running while speaking. Their actions were cross-checked against post-incident video footage and CCTV recordings, which were sent to the Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL) for analysis.
Reconstructing the Conspiracy
The chargesheet details the alleged network behind the attack. It explains how the grenade and weapons were reportedly acquired, stored, and transported by the accused prior to the incident. Financial records and digital data, including mobile location tracking, were analyzed to map the suspects’ movements and roles. Additionally, the escape path was reconstructed using Google Maps to support the case.
