BJP Announces Abhishek Kumar as Bankipur Bypoll Candidate
BJP fields Abhishek Kumar for Bankipur - The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has selected Abhishek Kumar, a prominent youth figure and new electoral entrant, as their candidate for the July 30 Bankipur assembly by-election. This decision marks Kumar’s debut in politics, as he steps into the fray to represent the party in the constituency.
Committee Approval and Political Ties
BJP’s national general secretary, Arun Singh, confirmed the nomination through a statement from the party’s central office in New Delhi. The central election committee gave its nod to Kumar’s candidature, highlighting his connection to key party leadership.
"The central election committee has approved Abhishek Kumar’s nomination, underscoring his alignment with the party's vision," said Arun Singh.
Kumar’s Political Experience and Community Role
Kumar, currently serving as vice-president of the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM), has a history of organizational leadership. He previously led the BJYM Patna Mahanagar unit and held positions such as mandal president and mandal general secretary. His work within the Kayastha community has also positioned him as a familiar face in local politics.
Opposing Candidates and Electoral Landscape
Kumar will contest against Prashant Kishor, founder of Jan Suraaj, and Rekha Kumari, also known as Rekha Gupta, the RJD’s nominee. Rekha Gupta had previously contested the seat in the 2025 assembly election but was unsuccessful.
Constituency History and Demographics
Bankipur, which was renamed from Patna West after the 2008 delimitation, has been a stronghold for the BJP since the 1990s. The late Naveen Kishore Prasad Sinha, father of BJP national president Nitin Nabin, first secured victory from the constituency in 1995. Nabin followed in 2006, maintaining the BJP’s dominance for nearly two decades until his Rajya Sabha tenure began in April.
Electoral Data and Key Blocs
The Bankipur constituency comprises 3,79,471 electors, with a breakdown of 1,99,987 male voters, 1,79,467 female voters, and 23 transgender voters. The Kayastha community, estimated to have around 70,000 members, is a pivotal voting bloc in the area. Other significant groups include OBC castes and Muslim minorities, which also contribute to the constituency’s diverse electorate.
Bypoll Timeline
Nominations for the by-election close on July 13, with the final deadline for withdrawal set for July 16. The outcome is expected to be announced on August 3.
