AIP to seek public opinion on Engineer Rashid’s resignation as Baramulla MP

AIP to seek public opinion on Engineer - The Awami Ittehad Party (AIP) has initiated a process to gather feedback from its local members regarding the potential resignation of Engineer Rashid as the Baramulla member of parliament. The decision to step down from the Lok Sabha, due to his challenges in connecting with constituents, will be evaluated through grassroots consultation.

Committee Decides on Consultation Process

Inam Un Nabi, the AIP's chief spokesperson, stated that the party’s political affairs committee reviewed the situation thoroughly and opted for a broad consultation. This will involve engaging party officials and members across all 18 assembly segments of the Baramulla constituency.

“After analyzing various aspects of the issue, the committee concluded that a two-day dialogue with party functionaries at different levels is necessary to determine whether Engineer Rashid should remain in office or resign,” Inam said.

Background on Rashid’s Legal Situation

Engineer Rashid, who secured the Baramulla Lok Sabha seat in 2024 while under detention, has been in Tihar Jail since 2019 following an arrest by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) linked to a terror funding case. He has been periodically released on bail for personal and professional obligations.

Inam added that the party might introduce a secret ballot to allow cadres to voice their opinions without external influence. This step aims to ensure transparency and fairness in the decision-making process.

Public Engagement as Priority

Party representatives at the panchayat and block levels will interact with citizens and community groups to collect insights on Rashid’s role. The final decision will mirror the collective sentiment expressed during the consultations.

“The goal is to align any action regarding Rashid’s future with the expectations of the people who entrusted him and the party,” Inam emphasized.

The results of the discussions and voting will be shared with Rashid, enabling him to make a well-informed choice about his position. The process underscores the AIP’s commitment to democratic participation within its ranks.
