Bihar CM convenes NDA meet on July 10 amid push for greater alliance cohesion
Bihar CM Convenes NDA Meeting for Alliance Unity on July 10
Bihar CM convenes NDA meet on July – Bihar’s Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has called an urgent meeting with key National Democratic Alliance (NDA) leaders on July 10, aiming to strengthen internal coordination and address recent tensions within the coalition. The gathering, held at Lok Sewak Awas, brought together ministers, district representatives, and state-level officials from the alliance’s five parties. This decision follows mounting pressure to unify the political front ahead of critical upcoming elections, including the Bankipur Assembly by-election on July 30. The meeting serves as a strategic move to evaluate the government’s performance, enhance collaboration, and gather feedback from grassroots members to ensure a cohesive message for voters.
Government Accountability and Grassroots Engagement
The primary focus of the meeting was to assess the government’s performance and ensure accountability among NDA partners. Sanjay Jha, the Janata Dal (United) working president, emphasized that district-level leaders would have the opportunity to voice concerns directly to the chief minister. “This will allow us to understand how the government is functioning on the ground and align our efforts toward common goals,” he said. Jha also highlighted the importance of maintaining transparency, as public trust in the administration has been tested by recent controversies.
“By engaging with our local representatives, we can ensure that the alliance remains responsive to the needs of the people and strengthens its grassroots support,” Jha added.
Sanjay Saraogi, BJP state president, noted that this meeting marked the first under Nitish Kumar’s leadership to facilitate direct communication between district leaders and the chief minister. While Saraogi refrained from specifying the agenda, he stressed that the gathering would serve as a platform to address any emerging issues. “The focus is on unity, and we are prepared to work together to overcome challenges,” Saraogi said, underscoring the NDA’s commitment to presenting a unified front.
Political Tensions Amid Controversy
The meeting gained added significance following the recent controversy over the alleged police encounter in Bhojpur district, which led to the death of Bharat Bhushan Tiwari, 28, on June 17. Raju Tiwari, leader of the Lok Janshakti Party (LJP), confirmed that Union minister Chirag Paswan is expected to attend the session. This incident has sparked division among NDA members, with some leaders accusing the police of staging the encounter and others defending the actions as necessary for self-defense.
Tiwari’s family alleged that the police had orchestrated the encounter to eliminate Bharat, who was described as a peaceful protester. The police, on the other hand, claimed that Bharat had opened fire on their team, prompting a retaliatory action. This dispute has fueled political debate, with NDA partners offering conflicting narratives about the incident’s circumstances and its implications for the alliance’s credibility.
Differing Perspectives Within the NDA
Chirag Paswan, the Union minister and LJP chief, took a firm stance, calling the incident a “murder in the name of a police encounter.” He demanded the immediate arrest of the officers involved and informed Union home minister Amit Shah about the matter after meeting with Bharat’s family. Paswan’s position has drawn criticism from some within the alliance, as he seeks to highlight the government’s accountability in the matter.
Jitan Ram Manjhi, Union minister and HAM (Secular) chief, offered a contrasting view, asserting that the police action was “absolutely correct” and justified as self-defense. He argued that without the initial gunfire, officers might have faced greater danger. “The police acted in accordance with their duties, and the outcome was necessary,” Manjhi stated, aligning with the government’s narrative. However, his comments have been met with skepticism from JD(U) ministers who have criticized the incident as a setback for policing reforms.
Strengthening Electoral Strategy
As the meeting progressed, discussions centered on the alliance’s electoral strategy ahead of the Bankipur Assembly by-election on July 30. In response to public outcry over the Bhojpur incident, the Bihar government had already suspended several police officials and filed a First Information Report (FIR) against those named by Bharat’s family. Nitish Kumar’s team has been working closely with other NDA partners to ensure a unified message and coordinated efforts to win the upcoming vote.
“The government is committed to addressing the concerns raised by the public and will take decisive action to restore faith in the police force,” Kumar said, reiterating the need for unity among alliance members.
With the July 30 poll approaching, the meeting aims to solidify the alliance’s position and prevent further fragmentation. Kumar’s leadership has been instrumental in bringing together diverse political factions, and the gathering reflects his dedication to maintaining harmony within the NDA. By fostering open dialogue and addressing issues head-on, the event underscores the alliance’s efforts to project strength and stability to voters ahead of the critical contest.
