Canada Introduces Social Media Access Restrictions for Minors

Canada planning social media ban for users – The Canadian government is set to unveil a new law this week that limits access to social media for individuals under 16. The measure aims to protect young users from online risks, according to reports from multiple Canadian news outlets.

Broader Legislative Framework Addresses Digital Harm

This initiative will be incorporated into a broader online harms bill, which is scheduled for parliamentary debate on Wednesday, as reported by several Canadian news sources. The legislation is expected to focus on dangers posed by AI chatbots, particularly their influence on children’s digital experiences.

A regulatory body is set to be established to oversee social media practices, especially those involving young users. Companies that implement effective safeguards to minimize harm to children may see reduced restrictions under the law.

“We must step in as the federal government. There’s no alternative,” said Marc Miller, Minister of Canadian Heritage, during a recent appearance before a parliamentary committee.

AI Chatbots and a Tragic Case in British Columbia

A recent case in Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia, highlighted the potential dangers of AI chatbots. In February, a 18-year-old transgender shooter killed eight individuals, and a WSJ investigation revealed the perpetrator had been restricted on OpenAI’s ChatGPT platform but law enforcement wasn’t alerted to their suspicious activity. They later created a new account.

“Though words cannot fully convey the impact, an apology is essential to acknowledge the harm and loss your community has endured,” wrote Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, in a letter to Tumbler Ridge.
